This work, made over the past twelve years, interrogates time, movement and change.
The formulation of time-based drawing and making tasks leads to visual outcomes over set periods of time; this enables both the marking of time and the creation of personal icons for the passing of time. This work is inextricably linked to my family life and my ongoing responsibilities. By committing myself to making something every day it doesn’t matter how long it takes as long as some thought, energy and focus has been spent making it and I’m happy with the outcome on the day – it takes its place within the procession. Each element can be seen as part of the growing group, one of any number of smaller groups or an individual piece.
This slow method of working responds well to a slow, close-up viewing. The work is always organized differently depending on where it is shown. Sometimes people are invited to interact with it and sometimes performers help to bring the work to life.
Since the beginning of this year (2024) I have wrestled myself away from the comforting rhythm of the daily making habit and am allowing myself to revisit and respond to some of the work, animating it and making new stand-alone work. I’m finding this exciting and liberating. Will attempt to share some of this process here.
