In June 2013, as part of the Letchworth Festival, Jane collaborated with other Digswell Arts Trust artists based at the Fenners Building in Letchworth on a two week project running parallel to the exhibition ‘Timeline’, during which Letchworth schools and families were invited to work with artists.

Jane writes:

“A number of us already had experience of teaching and/or running art projects and we felt that it would be exciting to invite schools and the general public in to work with artists during the fortnight of the annual Letchworth Festival, in June, during which time we also planned to hold an art show, linked to Letchworth’s early heritage.

We were awarded funding from The North Herts District Council and the Heritage Foundation to provide free workshops for schools and families and additionally received funding from the Arts Council towards the exhibition.

All sixteen artists created new work for the show, Timeline, in response to Letchworth’s early heritage and pioneers. Eight of the artists also ran schools workshops and weekend drop in workshops for families.

We were delighted that most of the schools that came were able to select groups of children of different ages that they felt would benefit from the experience. The workshops each lasted for two hours and individual artists developed ideas that would help children to engage with the art works in the exhibition and also create work of their own, learning new skills and techniques as well as developing their own artistic ideas. The workshops included: printmaking, painting, sculpture, bookmaking, feltmaking, clay and fused glass and there were also free art therapy sessions.”

Here’s an article written by a student who attended one of Abu Jafar’s sculpture workshops.
